Kaido Shonin, formally, Nissen Shonin; the founder and the great leader of Honmon Butsuryu Shu was born in 1817 in Kyoto and was named Senjiro. As a cultural personality, his pseudonym was Nagamatsu seifu, then he gave his name as Muton-Seifu Nissen after he ordained as a priesthood at the age of 32.
At Age of 29, Nissen Shonin faithfully applied himself to the religion of the Honmon Hokke Shu. He was ordained as a priest in 1848 at the age of 32. 10 yeas after that, confrontation occurred between Honmon Hokkekyo that still remained to have the conservative and conventional ways and Nissen Shonin who tried to reform Buddhism. At last, the difference in belief caused Nissen Shonin to part from Honmon Hokke Shu when he was 39 years old, and he decided to spread the teachings of Nichiren Shonin and Nichiryu Shonin faithfully with his own hands.
He started lecture meeting called Honmon Butsuryuko at the age of 41, to perform the religious practices of Honmon Butsuryu Shu with lay
followers, where he was deeply impressed by their serious devotion to the faith.
"30 years of leaning taught me that leaning was not necessary.
To go back to the only one word; "faith", which I used to have, is what leaning is."
From this realization, Honmon Butsuryuko (Oko) started that concentrated on praying to repeat chanting of the phrase Namumyohorengekyo, which is also known as Odaimoku. People who accomplished the Meiji restoration to gain the equal rights failed to reform the caste system by political power in the same era when Nissen Shonin penetrated how "Oko" should be, in which people devote to the faith regardless they are priests or not. To consider that historical background, the quintessence of Nissen Shonin comes from that of The Buddha Shakyamuni who preached sutra from the standpoint of absolute equality in India that practiced sever caste system.
Nissen Shonin passed away Nirvana in 23rd year of Meiji era. |
